What's the story?
PSG star Thomas Meunier has seen his game time greatly reduced because of the ageless wonder that is Dani Alves and looks set to leave the Parc des Princes sooner rather than later. The 27-year-old is very highly rated by United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and seems to be earmarked to replace the disastrous Ashley Young. But with reports suggesting that Unai Emery is also looking at the Belgian as a possible target, things are going to get feisty.
In case you didn't know...
Unai Emery has done quite a commendable job in his first campaign as Arsenal manager. Although the wheels fell off towards the end as they failed to finish in the top 4, the Gunners find themselves in the final of the Europa League. Reinforcements are really needed as injuries and lack of personnel to fit his system have cost them dearly. If Arsenal are to get into the mix for top 4 and possibly compete for the title, the club needs a big summer.
Solsjkaer too started off great but dropped the ball completely when the pressure started building. The defence has been a huge issue for the Red Devils for a while now and signing a top defender like Meunier will go a long way in the club's effort to rebuild the side.
The heart of the matter
Both clubs have struggled defensively and can use all the help they can get. At £25 million, Meunier comes at a reasonable price with a lot of experience at the very top level. Great going forward as well as defensively he'd be great playing as a wing back as both managers have experimented with a three-man defence this season.
Contributing to 13 goals this season as well as laying off one key pass and taking one shot per game, he'd add a different goal threat for opponents. Standing at 6'2'' he's a threat from set pieces as well. A well rounded defender indeed.
What's next?
At 27, he's at the peak of his powers and would want to play week in and week out and if Arsenal or Manchester United really want his services, they can very easily get him as he isn't viewed as too important by the Parisian heirarchy. A solid signing that both clubs should look to complete as soon as possible.
