Hot on the heels of reports suggesting that moves to bring Mathieu Debuchy and Alexis Sanchez to Arsenal are close, The Daily Express believe that Arsenal are to make a move for Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira.
The Gunners are said to be close to wrapping up deals for Barcelona attacker Sanchez and Newcastle right-back Debuchy, leaving defensive midfield as their remaining problem position.
The Express believe that they have targeted Khedira and that Real are willing to sanction a £24 million move to north London, having lined up Bayern Munich’s Toni Kroos as a replacement.
Injury restricted 27-year-old Khedira to just 13 La Liga appearances last season. However he has since featured in five of Germany’s World Cup fixtures, dismissing any doubts over his fitness.
Arsenal are in the market for a holding midfield player in order to plug the gaps that saw them come unstuck against big team’s last season. Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini both filled the role at times last season, but neither convinced and a new central midfield player is likely to arrive at The Emirates this summer.
