Reports: Barcelona set to offer €110 million to sign Chelsea target

Do Barcelona really need him?
Do Barcelona really need him?

What’s the rumour?

Barcelona may have recently agreed to the signing of Frenkie De Jong in the summer but that doesn’t mean that they are going to stop spending more on midfielders as this report from AS claims that the Catalans want to sign former Real Madrid youth star Saul Niguez.

In case you didn’t know…

This is not the first time that Barcelona have been linked with the Atletico Madrid star. They came close to signing him in 2017 but the Rojiblancos convinced him to stay and sign an extension until 2026 with a release clause of a whopping €150 million.

The heart of the matter…

The report from AS claims that the Blaugrana are willing to offer €110 million to sign the midfielder and, in the process, make him the most expensive Spanish player of all time.

Chelsea are also said to be interested in the player and were actually willing to pay the entirety of his release clause but the recent ban from FIFA for the next two transfer windows throws them out of the equation at the moment.

The report also adds that while he is keen to stay at Madrid for now, if he is to leave, he would prefer a move within the Spanish league.

Rumour rating: 5/10

AS are a Madrid-based outlet and it quite difficult to believe that Barcelona would pay so much money for another midfielder just days after agreeing to sign De Jong for around €86 million.

What’s next?

Saul is an essential cog in Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid. The Rojiblancos recently defeated Juventus 2-0 in the first leg of the round of 16 and still have an outside chance of winning the league – and Saul is an important player if they are to achieve anything.
