Reports in the Spanish press claim that Cristiano Ronaldo is in talks with Real Madrid for a new contract which will keep him at the club until 2020, with the Portuguese star likely to retire at Los Blancos. The spate of reports comes in response to rumours that Ronaldo has met with French giants Paris St. Germain to seek a transfer to the financially wealthy club.
Spanish newspaper El Confidencial has reported the news the Ronaldo’s agents are negotiating a new deal, with florentino Perez keen on retaining the Portuguese star
Ronaldo had been considered to be experiencing a decline in his performances as he recently turned 31, although a recent resurgence in numbers were capped off with a stunning match-winning hat-trick against Wolfsburg in the UEFA Champions League, as Real Madrid stared an ignominious exit in the quarterfinals.
The report states that the upsurge in Ronaldo’s form has reassured the club, with Florentino Perez keen to keep Ronaldo at the club until he retires. The Madrid President’s hand will be forced, as Ronaldo is only contracted with Real Madrid until 2018, which leaves Los Blancos with only two options – sell him now to recoup their financial outlay, or keep him at the club.
Ronaldo must choose between PSG and Real Madrid
French newspapers reported earlier that Ronaldo had met with Paris Saint-Germain owner Nasser Al-Khelaifi to hammer out a mega-bucks deal. Ronaldo has achieved pretty much every accolade with Real Madrid and might seek out a new challenge in Paris.
However, the Spanish newspaper’s response was to immediately dismiss the rumours, publishing reports of Ronaldo’s negotiations with Real Madrid. Los Blancos want Ronaldo to retire at the club offering a deal until 2020, when he will be 35 years old, with a deal until 2021 also on the table.
El Confidencial also report that “Florentino has no option but to renew or sell. That’s why he feels that keeping CR7 is still, as of now, the best plan.” The wages required to tempt Ronaldo to stay with Real Madrid are ‘astronomical’, according to the report. Madrid are reportedly keen to wrap up negotiations soon and announce the deal before the summer, to prevent speculation about the Portuguese star’s future.
Ronaldo leads the race for the Pichichi so far, having scored 31 league goals this season, with only Zlatan Ibrahimovic having scored more (32) in Europe’s top leagues. Ronaldo’s recent uptick in form has propelled Real Madrid to just a point behind Barcelona, after having seemed out of the title race a few weeks ago.
