Hugo Lloris might finally be ready to leave Tottenham Hotspurs to fulfill his dream of playing in the Champions League. Although the Frenchman signed a five-year contract for the Spurs last July, he might leave at the end of the season, as Tottenham look unlikely to qualify for next year’s Champions League.
Lloris signed for Tottenham in 2012 for a fee of £8 million from Lyon. Lloris already had Champions League experience under his belt from his time at Lyon and hoped to continue to play in the prestigious league when he joined Spurs. Unfortunately, that has not yet happened and the player cannot help but feel frustrated.
Lloris, captain of the French team, is virtually the only French player to not have played in the Champions League this year.
A move to a club that can offer the 28-year-old Champions League football could be more difficult than he anticipated. Although the length of Lloris’s contract could be a turn off for many possible suitors, Tottenham have a record for selling several high profile players with a big contract for big money. Luka Modric was sold to Real Madrid two years after he signed a six-year extension in 2010, similarly Gareth Bale was sold to Real Madrid the summer after he signed a four-year contract in 2012.
Likely destinations for Hugo Lloris
One of the clubs interested in the player is Paris Saint Germain, who are looking for a player to replace Salvatore Sirigu.
Manchester United might also be another possible destination for the goalkeeper, but the move would be completely dependent on David de Gea. If De Gea were to move to Real Madrid, then Lloris woul be an ideal replacement for the Spaniard as he already has experience playing in the Premier League.
The shot-stopper might end up staying as he has a good relationship with manager Mauricio Pochettino, and enjoys his game at Tottenham.
