Andre Ayew of Ghana celebrates scoring his team's first goal during the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil Group G match between Germany and Ghana at Castelao on June 21, 2014 in Fortaleza, Brazil.

Reports suggest that Manchester United and Liverpool are set to go head to head in a transfer battle to sign Marseille winger Andre Ayew.

The Ghana international has impressed during the Black Stars’ World Cup campaign, scoring two goals in their three Group G fixtures, sparking interest in his services from a number of clubs.

The 24-year-old winger scored against USA and Germany, but was powerless to stop Ghana exiting the tournament, by virtue of two defeats and a draw. His performances did, however, draw admiring glances from the Premier League, withThe Express reporting that United and Liverpool are preparing bids.

Manchester United are looking for reinforcements following a disappointing season last year, while Liverpool need to bolster their squad in order to prepare for the demands of Champions League football next season, a need made all the more acute by the four-month ban handed out to Liverpool’s Luis Suarez after biting Giorgio Chiellini.

Ayew made 25 league appearances for Marseille last season, scoring six goals and providing three assists.

The winger has previously spoken about his admiration for the Premier League, saying; “It’s a league every player dreams about.

“The English league is the one most followed in Ghana. It’s true that I have a real preference for England.”
