What’s the rumour?
As reported by the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United have identified Southampton's Cedric Soares as a leading candidate to replace Antonio Valencia this summer.
In case you didn't know...
A Portuguese international, Cedric is a product of Sporting's famed youth academy. He made the switch to England in 2015 when he was bought by Southampton to replace Nathaniel Clyne.
The right-back is nearing 100 appearances for the club in all competitions and has a contract till 2020.
He is also a regular for the Portugal national team and was a key member of the squad that won the UEFA Euro 2016.
The heart of the matter
It has been one of the worst ever seasons for Southampton as the club finds itself in the relegation zone and 4 points away from safety. As a result, many of their players are being targeted by the bigger clubs, should they fail to avoid relegation.
United have had defensive issues throughout the season and one among them is an ageing Antonio Valencia. The right-back will turn 33 in August and in a bid to compete for trophies on all fronts next season, Mourinho is reportedly looking at possible alternatives to strengthen the position.
Cedric has allegedly emerged to be a key target as per the report. His market value is around €15 million.
Rumour rating/probability - 6/10
Even though many outlets are reporting the same, we do not have sufficient information yet from credible sources that suggest a move is close. As such, this remains just a rumour for now.

Author’s take
United will have to replace Valencia in a year or two, and considering how difficult it is to find established right-backs, it will be a sensible move for United if they go ahead and pursue a deal for Cedric. The 26-year-old is nearing the prime of his career and can help United by lending solidity to their defence.
