What's the story?
According to the Sunday Times, Manchester United goalkeeper, David De Gea is expected to receive a £90 million package on a five-year deal which would make him the best-paid player in the Premier League.
If the deal got finalized, he would earn more than Paul Pogba, Alexis Sanchez and even Mesut Ozil at Arsenal.
In case you didn't know
David De Gea signed for Manchester United in 2011 replacing the legendary Edwin Van Der Sar at Old Trafford. The Spaniard struggled in his initial days and got heavily criticized for his performances.
However, Sir Alex Ferguson believed in him and with time he became one of the best goalkeepers in the world. De Gea is also the recipient of Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award on three successive years which is a record in the club's history.
The heart of the matter
Sanchez signed for Manchester United in January 2018 for a whopping wage of £400,000 per week.
At that time, the salary looked justified given his quality and the value he could bring to the side.
However, Alexis has failed to impress for United and gradually heading towards one of the transfer disasters of all time.
There were speculations that De Gea wants to leave United as he doesn't consider the squad capable of challenging at the big stages unless he becomes one of the highest paid players at the club.
The board seemed reluctant to pay such huge amount of money for a goalkeeper, but given his importance, it seems Ed Woodward is set to make De Gea the highest earner in the Premier League.
Rumour Rating - 7/10
The Times is a reliable source, and with De Gea's contract running out at the end of 2019-20 season, it seems reasonable that United wants to keep him at the club and as a result of this agreeing to his demands.
What's next?
The news would surely be music to the ears for the United fans who desperately want to get their talismanic goalkeeper sign a new long term contract at the club.
The Red Devils are in the race for a top-four finish and De Gea would play a crucial role till the end of the current season.
