Manchester United winger Adnan Januzaj has reportedly received death threats, according to the Independent, with his decision to represent Belgium at international level believed to have angered both Kosovo and Albanian nationals.
Januzaj was eligible to play for a number of countries due to the ethnicity of his parents, who had fled a war-torn Yugoslavia in the early 1990s to settle in Brussels, with Kosovo one of the areas affected by the skirmishes.
The Manchester United man was born in Belgium and opted to represent the nation of his birth and earned himself a call-up to their World Cup squad, with Marc Wilmots men progressing to the quarter-finals before being defeated by Argentina.
The decision was not popular in some quarters of the Belgium camp, with Kevin Mirallas one who spoke out about the decision to call up Man United’s Januzaj, but it has proven even less so back in the nation of his heritage, with death threats being sent due to his decision to turn his back in his parents’ home.
Januzaj had been invited to play an unofficial game for Kosovo before he cemented his commitment to Belgium as they played their first ever independent match in March. However, he turned it down in order to focus on the finale to the season with United and choose his international career without the pressures of having played for another nation already.
It is reported that Januzaj has been warned not to set foot in Kosovo.
