Zinedine Zidane was appointed as the interim coach of Real Madrid back in January after Florentino Perez dismissed Rafa Benitez. The club were enduring a dismal season by their standards when Zidane stepped in.
The Frenchman completely turned their fortunes around. Los Blancos narrowly lost out on the title as Barca beat them by a point but it is still a massive achievement considering they were almost out of the title race at one stage.
And now he has managed to take his team to the final of the Champions League. But neither the club nor the manager have stated with complete certainty if he will stay at the club. Knowing the recent history of the club it might as well be Zidane’s last game.
According to Sky Sports Italia , Madrid have been in contact with Sevilla's coach Unai Emery as a possible replacement for the Frenchman and Perez has told him to wait until the final of the UCL is over. Emery has an impressive record and has done a marvellous job wherever he has gone.
His reputation has grown leaps and bounds in the last 3 years. The work he has done with Sevilla has not gone unnoticed and it is no surprise that Madrid have come calling. The manager became the first in history to lead his team to 3 consecutive Europa league titles.
A lot also hinges upon the UEFA Champions League final. If Real Madrid lose the final to Atletico then doubts will once again creep up about the ability of Zidane as a coach in Florentino Perez’s head.
The controversial president is known for sacking managers and not given them time to create a team and bring stability to the club. The reasoning for this mentality arguably lies in the amount of money he spends on players each season and therefore it puts a lot of expectation on the manager to deliver.
Zidane unsure about future
Zidane was questioned on his future and whether he plans to stay after the end of the season. But the coach refused to comment on his situation and was focused on his job. “I only concentrate on what we have to do, we’ll see what happens at the end of the season.”
There is good news on the Ronaldo front as the Portuguese has stated his desire to end his career at the club. There are also reports of Real Madrid ready to offer him a 3-year extension once the UEFA Champions League final is over.
