Former Chelsea forward Mateja Kezman has slammed Manchester United for not opening contract talks with Serbian defender Nemanja Vidic.
Vidic, 32, confirmed last night that he will be leaving Old Trafford in the summer when his contract expires. Italian club, Inter, are set to complete his signing in the next couple of weeks, if reports are to be believed.
Kezman expected United to extend the club captain’s contract beyond the summer but he feels that Vidic was treated poorly.
He told Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast: “They waited too long to talk about a new contract. They didn’t find the time and they finally made it and it made him a little bit angry and mad.
“He deserved better from the club, they had to talk to him a few months ago not wait until the last days. So I think he’ll be angry because he doesn’t have time to waste anymore.”
Injuries have hampered the 32-year-old defender in recent seasons but Kezman believes with a good rest, Vidic will return to top form and come back to make United regret their decision.
“I’m not worried about Vidic because he has lots of offers on the table but Manchester United should have made a better decision because they’ll find it difficult to find a player with that kind of character, which is very important, and with that kind of quality,” he said.
“He’s been unlucky with injuries the last two years but maybe at summer time and next season he’ll be on top form but United haven’t decided to wait for him and it’s a pity.”
Vidic has started just 39 out of United’s last 100 Premier League matches.
