Ex-Manchester United defender, Rio Ferdinand has revealed that Alexis Sanchez’s power packed performance against the Red Devils has turned his sons into Arsenal fans.
Rio, who is now a television pundit for BT Sport, travelled to the Emirates with his sons for the match between Arsenal and his beloved club, Manchester United. Sanchez and Ozil tore United to pieces in a rather emphatic fashion, leaving his sons awestruck. Sanchez scoredtwice against United, with Ozil bagging one as well to ensure a comfortable win for The Gunners.
"My boys came to the game in Manchester United tops, but they left asking for Alexis Sanchez shirts," he said on BreatheSport football show.
Alexis Sanchez joined Arsenal from Barcelona last year, for a fee reported to be around £35 million, and has hit the ground running since his arrival. He scored 25 goals for Arsenal in his first season across all competitions and also helped Arsenal win the FA Cup.
The Chilean had a surprising run of 10 Premier League matches without a goal. But, he came back with a bang when he scored a hat-trick against Leicester City in a 5-2 win last month. He then scored again, four days later against Olympiacos, in a 2-3 group stage defeat in Champions League.
After that, as we all know, he mauled Manchester United with his 2 goals. The Copa America winner then scored in his third premier league game running, when he netted one against Watford on Saturday, in a 3-0 win. He has scored six league goals in three matches now.
Arsene Wenger must be ecstatic by the fact that Sanchez has found his goal scoring touch again. The Frenchman was under a lot of pressure from the fans to sign a good striker in the transfer window, but things didn’t materialise and Arsenal were left with Olivier Giroud as the only recognized striker. Theo Walcott has since replaced Giroud as the team’s main striker, but it’s Sanchez’s form that benefits Arsenal the most. Next up for Arsenal are the German giants, Bayern Munich, in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Wenger can only hope that Sanchez continues with his form to take Arsenal on the right path. And for Alexis, if he keeps playing like this, he can earn a lot of new fans, irrespective of which club they support.
