Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has predicted a fourth place finish for Premier League rivals Liverpool ahead of his team’s clash with the Merseyside team on Sunday.
Liverpool last achieved a fourth place finish four years ago and have slid down since then. Not much was expected from Brendan Rodgers when he took over the reigns from Kenny Daglish last season, with urgent rebuilding work needed to be done by him.
Liverpool have started their season on a positive note, winning both their opening matches and a victory over Manchester United on Sunday would give them a five point lead over their foes.
However, Ferdinand believes that it is too soon for Liverpool to pose a challenge to the top four clubs.
“It is too early to say whether they will challenge the top four,” Ferdinand told MUTV. “I don’t think they would have been in anyone’s reckoning before the season began.”
“But they have started the season very well and are looking to put themselves in a good position after those first three games.” he added.”
“I still see it being between Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea, with Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal going for that fourth spot.”
