Former Manchester United defender and retired England international, Rio Ferdinand has stated that according to him, Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld and Arsenal’s Laurent Koscielny are the two best defenders in the Premier League at the moment.
The 38-year-old Englishman who won six Premier League titles with the Red Devils in his 12-year spell with the club was one the best defenders in the League during his era. Ferdinand who also captained the England football team is one the best defenders the country has produced, Ferdinand is currently working as a pundit at BT Sport.
While discussing the best defenders in England at the moment, he named Toby Alderweireld as one of the two best defenders in the Premier League. The 27-year-old made the switch from the St Mary’s to the White Hart Lane last season for a sum of £11.5 million.
“In terms of importance he’s alongside Harry Kane,’ Ferdinand told BT Sport in regards to the Alderweireld. “He understands where to be on the football pitch, takes a chance at times, but he steps out and makes things happen.”
The former Red Devil also named Arsenal’s Laurent Koscielny alongside the 27-year-old Belgium international as the two best defenders currently playing in the Premier League. The French international is currently captaining the Gunners in the absence of the injured, Per Mertesacker.
“I think he’s one of the top two defenders along with Koscielny in this league and he does weigh in with a goal here or there.”
Toby Alderweireld has been instrumental in Tottenham Hotspur’s impressive defensive record this season as the Belgium international helped his team keep six clean sheets which is the second best in the League just behind Chelsea FC. Alderweireld and his Spurs backline have only conceded ten goals this season in the League which is the best record of all teams together.
Laurent Koscielny boasts an impressive defensive record as well keeping four clean sheets and only conceding ten goals in the games that he played. The Frenchman will be vital to Arsene Wenger’s team if they want to compete for the title. This will most likely be Wenger’s last season as the manager of the London club.
Both Tottenham and Arsenal will once again be fighting for the title after nearly missing out on lifting the Premier League last season. Leicester City stunned the world by winning their first ever Premier League title beating clubs with big budgets like Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City.
