Former France striker David Trezeguet, recovering from knee surgery, has been left out of River Plate‘s plans for the upcoming season.
The 1998 World Cup winner was told by club manager Ramon Diaz on Monday that he would not be included in a list of 25 players for the squad’s pre-season training which begins next week.
Trezeguet, 35, is under contract with the club he joined in January 2012 until 2014.
River Plate president Daniel Passarella, while supporting his manager’s decision, paid tribute to the veteran forward.
“David is an example to follow for what he has given to the club in critical times, both as a player and as a person,” Passarella told the ESPN television channel.
The veteran striker, born in France to an Argentine father, is a firm fans’ favourite at River Plate.
The Buenos Aires giants languished in the second tier of Argentine football when Trezeguet signed, but he helped them win an immediate promotion back to the top flight last year.
