River Plate and Talleres square off at the Estadio Mâs Monumental in the second leg of their Copa Libertadores round-of-16 clash on Wednesday. Having suffered a narrow defeat in the first leg, Walter Ribonetto’s men will need no extra motivation to produce a positive showing against their Argentine rivals as they look to turn the tie around.
River Plate continue to struggle for results away from home in the new Argentine campaign as they played out a 1-1 draw with Gimnasia at the Estadio Juan Carmelo Zerillo on Saturday.
Marcelo Gallardo’s men have now failed to win their five away games in the Primera Division, picking up just two points from a possible 15 while conceding six goals and scoring just twice.
River Plate now turn their attention to the Copa Libertadores, where they picked up an impressive 16 points from six games to finish first in Group H before claiming a 1-0 victory over Talleres in the first leg of the round of 16 last Wednesday.
Talleres were outplayed by the Estadio Mario Alberto Kempes and River Plate were rewarded for their dominance in the 86th minute when 29-year-old defender Paulo Díaz broke the deadlock to hand them a late win.
However, Talleres bounced back at the weekend, when they fought back from behind to secure a 2-1 victory over Independiente Rivadavia and end their five-game winless run in the Primera Division.
Head coach Ribonetto will hope his side can draw inspiration from their performance against Rivadavia as they journey to the Estadio Mâs Monumental looking to make a remarkable comeback.
