Robbie Keane: A Spurs Legend or a Flop?

It was announced last night that Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a deal with LA Galaxy for the Irish Captain Robbie Keane. Keane, who didn’t have the best of runs in the side after re-joining Spurs, has now made his “dream move” to the MLS side. On the day of his exit, let us take a retrospective look at his Tottenham career. Was he a legend or a flop?

Robbie Keane’s record:

Appearances: 306

Goals: 123

League Goals: 91

His record says that he was a top quality player. Keane left Tottenham in 2007 for Liverpool for 20mn. He was re-signed on deadline day in January transfer window of 2008 for 16mn. After that, his record turned out to be poor. Keane had some great moments and some really dreadful ones as well. His partnership with Dimitar Berbatov in the 2006, ’07 and ’08 seasons was superb, when he lead Spurs from the front, putting in performances worthy of a captain. Unfortunately, when he just couldn’t keep up with his fitness, Spurs became desperate to sell him because of his high wages.

Despite the exit, he certainly won the hearts of several Spurs fans with numerous moments of sheer brilliance. Helping Tottenham to the 2008 Carling Cup glory being one of his best contributions to the team, Keane is the ninth highest scorer in the history of the club. Only 15 Spurs players have crossed the 100 goal mark, and being part of this elite group certainly makes Keane a club legend.

What a fantastic career he had! Keane’s best moment was most certainly the one against Chelsea when he scored that last minute equaliser at White Hart Lane, one that is still fondly remembered by fans world over.

Now that he is headed to the MLS, Robbie Keane has a good 3 to 4 years left to offer for LA Galaxy. His potential partnership with Landon Donovan is an exciting prospect and he has got time to prove himself to fans who think his best years are now well behind him.
