Roberto Martinez, who replaced Red Devils boss David Moyes as the manager of Everton is convinced that United’s bid to lure Leighton Baines has been officially over.
In late June, Martinez revealed that Manchester United placed an official bid of £12million for the England international. However, he has confirmed that it was the first and final bid for Baines which was rejected because the amount was nowhere near the valuation of the Toffees player.
He is quoted in the Liverpool Echo saying: “Before we went to Austria one club officially contacted ourselves with an offer and it was a final offer.
“They put something over and the valuation wasn’t anywhere near the quality of Leighton Baines. That was the end of it but since then there’s been all the speculation, which has been part of what the transfer window is.
“There’s never been another club or anyone else putting in an offer for Leighton. Since then we’ve moved on, and we’re continuing to focus on the start of the season.”
As United have not returned with another offer for Baines, Martinez is more than convinced that Baines will be available for Everton beyond September 2nd which is the transfer deadline day.
It is unknown whether Moyes is going to launch another official bid for the Toffees’s player as he has Patrice Evra and 24-year-old Alexander Buttner in the squad.
