Manchester United striker Robin van Persie has revealed that he believes up to ten teams have a chance of winning the Champions League this season, according to Sky Sports.
David Moyes’ men face Greek outfit Olympiakos on Tuesday in their last-16 clash and the Dutchman, who has been linked with a return to former club Arsenal, is adamant they can go all the way in the competition despite their poor run of form in the Premier League.
“If you play well and are lucky you have a good chance of going far. Even then I think there are eight to 10 teams who could win it this year,” he told reporters.
The Red Devils face the real prospect of slipping out of Europe’s top club competition, unless they win the year’s trophy, as their chances of qualifying via a top four spot in the league look all but over.
Meanwhile, experienced midfielder Ryan Giggs is wary of the Greek side and does not want his team-mates to be over confident in their pursuit for a place in the quarter finals.
“The atmosphere in the stadium is going to be electric.
“It’s always great to play in a stadium with a good atmosphere, we know the Olympiakos fans are going to be cheering their team on, we also have a good set of travelling fans which will make for a great atmosphere.
“Once you get to this stage of the competition you know that there are not going to be any easy matches,” insisted the 40-year-old.
Although teams that have been less than favourites have gone on to win the trophy, United look a long way from being able to challenge the teams amongst the favourites for the competition such as Barcelona and Bayern Munich but should have enough to defeat Olympiakos.
