Manchester United enjoyed a comfortable 2-0 victory over FA Cup Champions Wigan Athletic in the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday, thanks to the Dutchman’s two goals in each half.
After an atrocious pre-season, Manchester United earned the first glory of the season and their first one under David Moyes.
Despite United struggling to lure players this transfer market, van Persie feels that, like the last season, Manchester United will win the title this season as well.
Van Persie quoted : “We’re doing really well and I believe in this team, we are the champions and based on that we are clear favourites. I believe in this team and I believe that we will compete until the end again.”
Manchester United’s player-cum-coach was also reported to be sailing in the same boat as van Persie. After the victory, Giggs said: “We just know we’ve got good players in the team. It’s always hard when you’re champions, you’ve got to reproduce the form that you showed last year and I hope we do that.”
Giggs who was pleased with the victory, said,”It was a very professional performance, we were a bit disappointed pre-season, letting a few goals in, so the main objective was to get a clean sheet. We wanted to do that as a team. Work hard, get behind the ball and I think we did that.”
