Robin van Persie, Manchester United‘s top scorer in 2012-13, said that he was shocked when Sir Alex Ferguson announced his retirement news to the team. Ferguson, during his 26 years at the club, won 38 trophies, including 13 Premier League titles and 2 UEFA Champions League titles.
In an interview with Sun, Persie said: “Sir Alex came through the dressing room door and the first thing he said was that he was retiring.
“I had to gasp for breath and I shook my head. Had he really said what I thought he’d said?
“The room fell deathly quiet and then everyone became emotional.
“Sir Alex then had a long talk with the squad. I found it a very special speech and felt privileged to have witnessed it.
“It was an historical moment for football, even though I was not happy to hear his message.”
van Persie joined Manchester United from Arsenal in summer 2012 for £22.5 million, with an additional £1.5 million to follow if United won a Premier League or Champions League title within the next four years.
