Robin van Persie has quelled reports that say attempts to form a partnership with Wayne Rooney have stagnated by claiming that their combined performance against Stoke City was an example of what they can achieve together.
It seemed Rooney was all-set to leave Old Trafford in the summer after being repeatedly played out of position last season. However, the striker is now playing down the middle under his new boss, and Van Persie believes the connection between the two players is growing by the game.
“Wayne’s a great player. In my opinion good players can always play together and I think we showed that against Stoke,” the Dutchman told Sky Sports News.
“We showed it last season, we showed it earlier this season and hopefully we can keep showing that because we do want to play together.”
Attempting to strike fear into their rivals, the former Arsenal hitman claims the talent doesn’t end with Rooney and himself.
The Dutchman continued: “But don’t forget Chicharito because he’s a great player. He’s a real role model to all footballers. He works so hard, I’m a really big fan of his. We will need all of our strikers.
“Over the years I’ve seen so many young players, and I can honestly say that of all the youngsters I’ve seen he is right up there in the top one or two.
“He’s a special player. He will give Manchester United a great bunch of goals and great games. He’s confident in a good way. He’s not too bothered with the whole occasion or the pressure of the games.”
David Moyes has seen his side stutter during the opening fixtures of the season. However, the former Everton manager will be delighted to hear that two of his star players are enjoying working together and wanting to take the club to the next level.
If he is to turn their season around he will need the experienced heads in the squad to continue to voice positive thoughts in the press to boost the confidence of the younger players at Old Trafford.
Robin van Persie has created just three chances for his team-mates this season. Last season he had created 14 by the same stage.
