Rodgers: Henderson can be the key to England success

Brendan Rodgers believes that Jordan Henderson could play a key role in helping England reach the latter stages of next summer’s World Cup in Brazil.

The Liverpool manager spoke out after Henderson was recalled to the England squad after not featuring for the Three Lions since they exited Euro 2012 on penalties to Italy last June.

The midfielder’s solid form and versatility for Liverpool has proved to be vital in their fantastic start to the new season and his club manager believes this is what has caught the eye of Roy Hodgson.

“It’s a big credit to him that I have been able to play him in a couple of positions because he is that type of player that he can play in those positions really well,” the Reds boss told the Liverpool Echo.

“If you are going to a World Cup you need players who can play in a number of positions. He can do that.”

The former Sunderland midfielder, who’s chances of selection were improved by a multitude of injuries, was a surprise inclusion in the England squad that was taken to Ukraine and Poland last year and many thought a poor start at Anfield could have been the downfall of his career.

Hodgson, however, is still trying to find his best starting eleven and although Henderson will find it hard work breaking into the starting line-up before next summer, he will be hoping to impress enough to earn a place in the final squad.

Jordan Henderson has played every minute of Liverpool’s Premier League matches this season, no other outfield player at the club can match this.
