Roman’s Ruthlessness: a dark shadow over Chelsea

Chelsea Training Ground Official Opening

Jurgen Klopp yesterday announced that he won’t leave Dortmund for Chelsea. Hate me or not, he is right in his decision. It is of no doubt that Roman is a great spectator of football and a die hard lover of Chelsea Football Club. No wonder, he has splashed tons of money for us. But it is his ruthlessness that makes more of the headlines than his goods. His continuous sacking of managers has driven good managers scared. First Pep Guardiola and now Klopp.

In Roman’s era, Chelsea has acquired twelve trophies and have seen numerous players coming in and going out of the club. He has spent lavishly to buy footballing talents for Chelsea highlighting the record breaking 50 million spent on Fernando Torres. It doesn’t matter on the price, if he thinks Chelsea is the benefactor. What’s wrong here is that Chelsea are seeing in Benitez, it’s ninth manager of Roman’s era. Roman Abramovich is a very impatient man and has sacked some good managers in his time.

Jose Mourinho was shockingly sacked on September 2007 who achieved two League titles, two League Cups, one FA Cup, one Community Shield in his 3 years at Chelsea. Carlo Ancelotti was sacked in 2011 after going trophy-less in his second season at Chelsea, who however won the first ever double (Premier League and FA Cup) in Chelsea’s history in his first season. Roberto Di Matteo was sacked in November of last year because he went through some poor results including the elimination from the group stages of the Champions League, which he won, including the FA Cup after coming in as interim manager in the second half of the 2011-2012 season.

These sackings have made Chelsea a frightening prospect for upcoming young managers. No Chelsea manager has been given full power at Chelsea. That is believed to be the reason Jose Mourinho was sacked after he struggled for power in 2007. Andre Villas Boas also expressed he didn’t get enough management power during his small time at Chelsea.

These ruthless actions of Roman has started to scare good footballing coaches. People think that if Roman splashes the cash, any manager would come to Chelsea. But that is not the case anymore. Long time Chelsea target and former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola choose Bayern Munich over Chelsea. This is believed to be because of the insufficient time he gives for the managers to prove themselves. And that has warded off Klopp too, who has won two German league titles, one DFB Pokal and one DFL Supercup at Borussia Dortmund.

Yesterday he announced that he wouldn’t leave Dortmund for Chelsea fuelling more speculation into the dark shadow Roman has cast over Chelsea’s future; Guardiola and Klopp are right. Why create a downfall in their shining career by coming to Chelsea and then getting sacked only because of the insufficient time provided to them. AVB has learnt the lesson. Pep and Klopp are only being cautious. Every manager should be given enough time. Sir Alex Ferguson won his first trophy only in his sixth season, after going through five trophy-less seasons at Manchester United. Now look at how many trophies he won at the club.

Now it’s only managers who have started to see Chelsea as a dark shadow. Who knows after sometime good players might start to reject Chelsea because of his unlimited access to the squad, including the access to the starting lineups. AVB and Roberto Di Matteo were sacked because they didn’t give enough playing time to misfiring Torres. Roman Abramovich and the board have some serious things to change, if Chelsea are to move in the right direction.
