Romelu Lukaku: England fans should support Belgium in the World Cup

Lukaku in action for Belgium

England’s World Cup dreams are all but over but Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku thinks that their fans should support his country for the remainder of the tournament according to the Mirror.

The Three Lions lost both their fixtures, signalling their exit from the tournament. However, Lukaku and Belgium have a golden opportunity of getting to the Round Of 16 if they defeat Russia later today.

Lukaku feels that the Three Lions faithful should now root for Belgium due to so many of their players plying their trade in the Premier League.

“I hope the England fans support us now,” said Lukaku.

“We are all proud that we play in such a beautiful country and that we have helped English football to become better. So hopefully the English will now support us throughout rest of the World Cup.”

The 21-year-old, who had brilliant loan spells with West Brom and Everton, remembers Belgium’s 2002 World Cup campaign like it was yesterday.

The Red Devils had reached the Round Of 16 in the 2002 competition but crashed out against eventual winners Brazil due to the referee disallowing current Belgium boss Marc Wilmots’ goal.

The striker, who was nine at that time, hopes his country don’t suffer heartbreak again.

“I remember everything,” he said. “I remember the goal that was disallowed. I was in class that day and I messed up everything.

“Now against Russia we will play against an experienced side, a very good team with a great coach. But we are ready. We want to qualify for the next round.

“This is Belgium’s first World Cup in 12 years, our first big tournament.

“So we are hungry, we want to show the world we are a good side and hopefully we will do it.”
