I happened to miss Chelsea‘s first pre-season game against the Singha All-Stars but was able to watch the whole of the game on Sunday against the Malaysian XI. Although he scored a good goal, Romelu Lukaku disappointed me with his overall contribution to the game in the first half.
Now it seems that with Fernando Torres only linking up with the first team on 28th July, Lukaku will get his big chance to start for Chelsea against Hull in our opening game of the season and I need to see something better from him as we build up to that game.
Like I said, he took his goal well and his movement off the ball to create the opening was good. He was calm and composed on a difficult pitch and made sure he was able to slot the ball left-footed passed the goal keeper to score.
However, in other aspects of his game he struggled. If like me, you watched the whole first half you would have noticed a number of times he was played into good positions on the edge of the box. Time and time again he hesitated, tried to move the ball onto his left foot and in doing so was either tackled or lost the ball.
I understand it is pre-season and it will take time to get everything going again but it was really disappointing considering (and I mean no disrespect to the Malaysian XI when I say this) the opposition were very weak at the back and very slight in stature compared to the big man.
I am hoping that we see much more of an improvement from everyone in Thursday’s game before we go to the USA to take on much stronger opposition. Lukaku must improve in particular and impose his game just as he did last season.
Must do better Romelu, must do better!
