Cristiano Ronaldo has just crossed an incredible 50 million on Facebook, according to Starcount.com, the social media popularity tracker. Since creating his page in 2009, the Real Madrid star has enjoyed immense popularity, and now averages around 40,000 new fans on Facebook every day, with over 1.5 million fans in the last month. Ronaldo was the first non-US star to reach the 10 million mark back in August 2010, and his social media growth has been unstoppable, hitting the 20 million milestone less than a year later, in February 2011. More popular than Justin Bieber and Katy Perry on Facebook, Ronaldo becomes the first person outside of the music industry to reach 50 million fans, and is the 6th most popular person on the network.
Not only is Ronaldo dominant on Facebook, he is the all-time No.1 on Starcount’s Sportsperson Chart. His closest competitor on social media is Barcelona rival Lionel Messi, who trails behind on Facebook with 38 million fans, gaining around 20,000 new fans a day. The debate may continue as to who is the best player in the world, but it is undeniable that Ronaldo is the most popular on social media by far.
While Ronaldo’s fancy footwork and skills on the pitch put him amongst the greatest athletes of the moment, he still soars above other current sports superstars like LeBron James and Real Madrid teammate Kaka. The Brazilian footballer is not far behind Ronaldo’s 13.7 million Twitter followers, with 13.1 million users following Kaka. Ronaldo is also far ahead of huge celebrity sporting figures such as David Beckham and Michael Jordan, who have 21.3 million and 20.6 million Facebook fans respectively.
