Rooney could miss Wembley date against City

Manchester United’s hattrick hero on Saturday gave his manager a fresh headache as Wayne Rooney was charged with improper conduct by the FA. Having been two goals down at half time, Rooney helped the premier league table toppers to turn it around helping himself to his 5th United hattrick. However, upon completion of his monumental feat, he couldn’t control his excitement, as the whole world witnessed Rooney swear on television. Although he was mindful enough to apologize immediately, issuing a statement which said,

I want to apologise for any offence that may have been caused by my goal celebration, especially to any parents or children that were watching. Emotions were running high and on reflection my heat of the moment reaction was inappropriate, it was not aimed at anyone in particular”.

Rooney's absence could cost United dear

However, it felt to deaf years as the FA decided to crack down upon the United number ten. He has been given till 6pm, April 5th to respond to the charges. A lone match ban would see him miss Manchester United’s weekend fixture against Fulham at Old Trafford whereas a double match ban could hurt United, ruling him out of the crucial semi final against Manchester City.

It has been a troubled year for the England forward. After having an incredible season last year, where he notched up 34 goals en route to being named the PFA Player of the Year, he could not carry on his form into the World Cup. He had clearly been rushed back from the injury he sustained against Bayern Munich in the first leg of Champions League quarter final clash. He scored just once from open play this season before the turn of the year, a period in which his personal life came under intense scrutiny from the media. To make matters worse, he made his desire to leave Old Trafford public and another weeklong melee ensued before Sir Alex finally managed to knock some sense into his head.

Just as he was about to look, he is back at his lethal best, a most unnecessary ban could disrupt the momentum. Rooney is made of sterner stuff though and one can be rest assured, irrespective of the outcome of Rooney’s hearing, he will be up and running hounding the like of Terry and co as United look to break their Stamford Bridge jinx in the first leg of UCL quarter finals on Wednesday. Against Fulham, United will fancy themselves without the services of Rooney but should he have to sit out the Man City game, he could be sorely missed. You need people with fire in their bellies to win you local derbies and just to refresh your memories this is what he did last time the two teams from Manchester locked horns:
