Former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane believes that several members of David Moyes’ side have no future at Old Trafford, following their 2-0 defeat against Olympiakos in the Champions League last-16, according to the Evening Standard.
The Red Devils produced an insipid display in Greece and were outplayed and outmanoeuvred by their opponents, who were worthy of their victory, courtesy of goals from Alejandro Dominguez and Arsenal loanee Joel Campbell.
“There’s some players playing tonight for Man United who just aren’t showing enough quality. I think United need six top quality players.
“I would think David Moyes has been shocked. I think when he went into United in the summer he probably looked at the players and was expecting great things.
“Privately he’s probably been shocked at the lack of quality that he’s working with,” blasted Keane.
Moyes’ debut season at United’s helm hit a new low last night as his first season looks increasingly likely to end in failure, but as Keane suggests, the players he has inherited have failed to reproduce the form that helped them claim an unprecedented 20th league title this season.
Midfielder Michael Carrick delivered a downbeat interview to ITV’s cameras shortly after the full time whistle and Keane also delivered a stinging criticism of the 32-year-old’s words.
“That interview was just like the performance: flat. He should say a bit more, have a bit more urgency even in his interview. That just reflected United’s performance tonight: flat, with no urgency.
“They keep saying, ‘Ah, well, next game, next game’. For some of them there won’t be another game for them. That’s the reality,” insisted Keane.
With several of United’s key men insisting they could win the Champions League this season earlier in the week, they did not look like a team ready to fight for the title, producing a lackadaisical display to complete a trio of losses for Premier League outfits at the last 16 stage.
“We’ve been brainwashed by this ‘Premier League is the best league in the world’ [talk].
“Nonsense. It’s the best brand, but we’ve seen over the past few weeks with a lot of the English teams struggling that these teams have fallen behind the top teams in Europe, and United in particular,” insisted Keane.
However, European competition is the least of United’s troubles, as they currently sit in sixth place and the risk of having their worst season in the modern era is now a reality.
