You are more likely to see Martin Demichelis beating Usain Bolt to 100m gold at the next Olympics than Roy Keane sitting on the fence and the fiery Irishman was in bullish mood in the ITV studio last night.
Keane was part of the punditry team covering Manchester City’s clash with Barcelona in the Champions League last 16 at the Etihad stadium, where the Catalans emerged victorious with a convincing 2-0 win.
City skipper Vincent Kompany was interviewed after the match and Keane took issue with the Belgian’s verdict that Manuel Pellegrini’s men had been the better side, despite Barcelona’s evident superiority.
“He’s obviously really tired after the game, I’m not sure he knows what he’s talking about. He’s obviously disappointed, frustrated. City have done well but it’s a harsh lesson for them, it’s a new level for them.
“I was worried before the game the experience of Barcelona, whatever question marks you have over them they have unbelievable quality in their team and we saw that tonight,” he declared.
It was City’s first ever game in the knock-out stages of Europe’s most prestigious cup competition and a Lionel Messi penalty and late Dani Alves strike leaves them with a tough task in the second leg, despite showing glimpses of positivity either side of Demichelis’ dismissal.
However, former Manchester United midfielder launched a scathing attack on the shortcomings of Kompany’s side and gave them little hope of reaching the quarter finals.
“Obviously with the sending off and the penalty it was a massive turning point but it was tough night. It’s a learning lesson, at this level in the Champions League if you give those type of goals away its almost impossible to get through to the next round.”
Presenter Adrian Chiles pressed Keane to rate the Citizens chances at the Camp Nou in the second leg and if he could make a case for them to progress, but Keane quipped bluntly, “No.
“We’re trying to make excuses for them tonight and give them the benefit of the doubt but to go and score three goals in Barcelona? Its almost impossible.”
