Arsenal are reportedly set to step up their interest in signing Wolverhampton Wanderers attacker Matheus Cunha. This comes after injuries to Bukayo Saka and Raheem Sterling, who are expected to be out for a few weeks.
Cunha has been in sensational form this season for Wolves, scoring 10 goals and providing four assists in 18 Premier League games. While his side are currently in a relegation battle, the Brazilian attacker has been a bright spark in their season. His performances have attracted interest from many clubs, including Arsenal, as per The Telegraph.
The Gunners have been monitoring Cunha for a while now and are now looking to step up their interest after Saka and Sterling's injuries. They are hoping to sign the Brazilian in the January transfer window to provide a boost in their Premier League title challenge. Cunha's contract with Wolves will expire in 2027 and as per Transfermarkt, his market value is €50 million.
The 25-year-old joined Wolves from Atletico Madrid, initially on loan, in January 2023 before the move was made permanent later that summer. He's scored 26 goals and provided 13 assists in 75 games for them.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta's update on Raheem Sterling and Bukayo Saka
The Gunners beat Crystal Palace 5-1 at Selhurst Park in the Premier League on Saturday, December 21. However, they suffered a big blow as Bukayo Saka had to come off due to a hamstring injury in the 24th minute. Manager Mikel Arteta said about the Englishman:
“It’s not looking good. He’s going to be out for many weeks. It’s a huge blow but it’s going to be a big exercise for us to overcome another challenge.”
Saka has been Arsenal's main man this season, scoring nine goals and providing 13 assists in 24 games across competitions. His injury will certainly be a big blow.
Meanwhile, Raheem Sterling, who last featured in the Gunners' 3-2 win over Crystal Palace in the EFL Cup quarter-finals on December 18, is also out injured. Arteta said about the Englishman on December 23 (via Goal):
"He’s gonna be out for weeks I believe. He needs further testing tomorrow to understand the extent of his injury. It’s his knee. We have to wait and see another 24 hours. Unfortunately he’s gonna be out for a while."
Arsenal signed Sterling on loan from rivals Chelsea in the summer. He's contributed one goal and two assists in 11 games across competitions this season.
