Barcelona have reportedly decided to end their pursuit of Athletic Club winger Nico Williams, who was also on Chelsea's radar earlier this summer, due to Raphinha's current form.
The Blaugrana, who finished second behind rivals Real Madrid in the La Liga table past campaign, were allegedly close to signing Williams after the UEFA Euro 2024. They were said to be ready to trigger the Spaniard's £49 million release clause, but opted to not sign him.
Now, according to Catalan website El Nacional, Barcelona are no longer interested in snapping up Williams in the future. Blaugrana sporting director Deco has faith in Raphinha now following the ex-Leeds United man's great start to the season under new boss Hansi Flick.
Raphinha, who was reportedly linked with Chelsea ahead of the 2022-23 term, has started 13 of 14 appearances across all competitions this season. The 27-year-old has found the back of the net a 10 times, including two hat-tricks, and laid out nine assists so far for his club.
On the other hand, Williams has endured a difficult start to the ongoing season. He has contributed just two goals and as many assists in 11 overall outings for Athletic Club this season after guiding Spain to glory.
Ex-Chelsea and Barcelona star suggests Cole Palmer is not 'world-class' despite stellar form
Speaking to betting platform Genting Casino, ex-Chelsea and Barcelona midfielder Emmanuel Petit has shared his honest thoughts on Blues attacking midfielder Cole Palmer. He said (h/t Mirror):
"Will the hype around Cole Palmer derail his form? No, I don't think so. Palmer had a very good season last season, but started poorly this season and responded well in September."
Petit, who left Barcelona to move to Chelsea in 2001, continued:
"The media are making so much noise about young talented players. Palmer is a very good player but he's not yet a top international player and that's the level he needs to reach. He shows promising skills, maturity and personality but he's done nothing yet if we're honest and is far from world-class at the moment."
Palmer, who was awarded the Premier League Young Player of the Season award last campaign, helped the Blues finish sixth last term. He scored 25 goals and laid out 15 assists in 45 total games for his club.
The Manchester City academy graduate has earned a lot of plaudits for his brilliant start to the 2024-25 campaign of late. The 22-year-old has registered six goals and five assists in 10 overall outings this season.
