Barcelona have reportedly been offered the chance to sign Liverpool star Darwin Nunez as a long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski. The Polish legend is now on the wrong side of 30s and the club have reportedly been searching the market for a decent replacement.
After eight successful seasons at Bayern Munich (2014-2022), Robert Lewandowski moved to Barcelona in the summer of 2022 for a reported €45 million. The Pole has recorded 84 goals and 19 assists in 120 outings for the Catalans across competitions. He has also won a LaLiga title and one Supercopa de Espana with them.
However, with Robert Lewandowski turning 37 this year, Barcelona are keen on signing a replacement for the legendary striker. According to the Catalan outlet El Nacional, Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez has come up as one of their options. The 25-year-old has lost his prominence at Anfield after the arrival of head coach Arne Slot.
The aforementioned report suggests that Nunez's agents have contacted other European giants to negotiate a potential transfer, including Barcelona. However, the Catalans' difficult financial situation is well-documented and a transfer as expensive as Nunez's could be problematic at this stage. The Uruguayan striker's salary, alongside his transfer fee, may not be a viable operation for Barca with their economic situation.
Yet, sources close to Barcelona sporting director Deco suggest that the Catalan side are studying the viability of the option. The club will be open to discussions, especially if Liverpool consider a loan deal with a purchase option. Moreover, Darwin Nunez is also reportedly keen on joining Barca as a part of their young, growing team.
Given Nunez's speed, physical flair, and pressing abilities, he would be a valuable addition to Hansi Flick's side. The Liverpool forward has contributed 37 goals and 20 assists in 120 appearances for the Reds. His current deal with Liverpool runs until June 2028.
Barcelona are keeping tabs on attacking targets Luis Diaz and Rafael Leao: Reports
According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are focused on securing the services of either Liverpool star Luis Diaz or AC Milan ace Rafael Leao in January. While the club has yet to register Dani Olmo and Pau Victor with LaLiga, they are exploring their options after reportedly returning to the 1:1 rule last week.
Diaz's current contract with the Reds runs until June 2027. However, the Colombian is reportedly reluctant to renew his deal. With 36 goals and 16 assists over 123 outings across competitions, Diaz has been an essential player for the Reds. It may be difficult for Barcelona to negotiate a transfer if they do not make a lucrative offer to the Merseysiders.
Barca's other target, Rafael Leao, is also reportedly facing a difficult situation at AC Milan. The report claims that Leao's relationship with the club has been sour in recent times, especially with former coach Paulo Fonseca. The Portuguese winger's agent, Jorge Mendes is on good terms with the Catalans and could help finalize a deal.
However, it will all depend on Barca's financial situation as the club are yet to register Dani Olmo and Pau Victor for the second half of the season.
