Some Spanish players from Barcelona were reportedly ready to go on strike if Dani Olmo wasn't registered with LaLiga this season. The case was provisionally resolved after the Higher Sports Council (CSD) granted Barca the necessary precautionary measure to register him on January 8, 2025.
Dani Olmo signed for Barcelona for a reported €62 million from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2024. The Spaniard was temporarily registered until December 2024 owing to Andreas Christensen's injury. However, the Catalans faced major trouble in re-registering Olmo and fellow player Pau Victor with LaLiga at the end of 2024. The problems arose from LaLiga's strict Financial Fair Play guidelines and Barcelona's well-known economic condition.
After facing multiple rejections from LaLiga, RFEF (Spanish Football Federation), and two courts, Barcelona failed to register Olmo and Victor within the given deadline of December 31. However, the CSD's ruling in favor of the club allows Dani Olmo and Pau Victor to play for the Catalans once again.
According to Esport3's Onze (h/t Diario SPORT), several Barcelona players representing the Spain national team were considering going on strike if Olmo were not to be registered. They were reportedly planning on pulling off an "act of disobedience" by not answering the national team's call-up in March. These players include Gavi, Pedri, Marc Casado, Pau Cubarsi, Lamine Yamal, and Fermin Lopez.
The aforementioned report suggests that the players would cite minor injuries or discomforts as reasons for not answering La Roja's call-up to avoid any disciplinary measures. The motive behind this was to pressure the RFEF into accepting Dani Olmo's registration.
It is worth noting that Olmo would not be able to play for Spain if he were to not be registered for his club this season, per Mundo Deportivo.
When will Dani Olmo and Pau Victor be able to play for Barcelona?
According to BBC, Dani Olmo and Pau Victor will be available to play for Barcelona in the Supercopa de Espana (Spanish Super Cup) final on January 12, 2025. The Catalan outfit qualified for the final after beating Athletic Club 2-0 on Wednesday (January 8) in the first semi-final.
Barca will face either Real Madrid or Mallorca in the final - as the two are set to clash against each other in the second semi-final tonight (January 9). The CSD's verdict also allows Dani Olmo and Pau Victor to feature in LaLiga and Copa del Rey games for the club. Both players will be available for Barca across competitions until the matter until the appeal is permanently resolved, per BBC.
Dani Olmo has had a decent run for the Catalans, contributing six goals and one assist in 15 appearances across all competitions. Meanwhile, Pau Victor has contributed two goals and one assist in 17 outings for the club.
