Barcelona are reportedly ready to sell one of their club captains, Frenkie de Jong, for a discounted price. The club management will not include the Dutchman in their plans unless he signs a new contract at the club.

Frenkie de Jong remained out of the pitch for 162 days in 2024 (April to October) owing to an ankle injury he picked up last season (2023-24). The Dutchman returned to the pitch in the 5-0 UEFA Champions League win against BSC Young Boys in October. However, De Jong has not been up to the mark with his recent performances despite coach Hansi Flick's initial trust in him.

De Jong has 362 minutes over 13 outings for La Blaugrana this season, recording one goal and one assist. Moreover, the midfielder has reportedly not responded favorably to Barcelona's contract renewal talks in recent times.

According to a report by SPORT (via Barca Universal), Barcelona are open to selling Frenkie de Jong in the summer if he does not renew his contract. The Catalans will also consider a comparatively lower fee for the midfielder, who is likely to be informed that he won't be a part of the club's plans next season.

The aforementioned report also suggests that Barcelona will be strict in their contract renewal terms this time. The club will require De Jong to agree to a reduced salary if he renews as he's one of the highest paid players at the club. If not, Barca are ready to bench him for the entirety of the final year of his contract, due to end in June 2026.

According to Diario SPORT (via Barca Universal), there is a remote chance of Barcelona signing a new midfielder on a loan deal in January. The reports came after the Catalans reportedly reached an agreement to sign an economic deal with a Qatari fund to bring over €100 million.

The new financial deal will reportedly help the club register key players like Dani Olmo and Pau Victor and also enable them to return to the 1:1 rule in LaLiga. The aforementioned report suggests that Barca are still not keen on bringing any players on a permanent transfer in January.

However, they are considering a loan deal for a midfielder to particularly reinforce the pivot position. The Catalans only have Marc Casado to cover the position this season, especially after Marc Bernal's long-term injury. Moreover, with Frenkie de Jong's departure on the cards, a loan deal for a pivot could add depth to Hansi Flick's side.
