Chelsea consider making move for Liverpool transfer target as Enzo Maresca looks to strengthen key position in January: Reports

Enzo Maresca
Enzo Maresca's side are keen to sign one of Arne Slot's targets.

Chelsea are reportedly interested in launching a winter move for Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi, who has also been linked with Liverpool of late.

The Blues, who sold Guehi to Crystal Palace for close to £20 million in 2021, are believed to be on the hunt for a defender this month. They could miss Wesley Fofana for the rest of the term and are without Benoit Badiashile due to an injury.

Now, according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea top brass have identified Guehi as a potential new signing owing to their current situation. However, a potential move for the Englishman is considered to be difficult to pull off.

Guehi, who was reportedly linked with Liverpool last summer, is relishing a great club season following his fine UEFA Euro 2024 campaign. He helped England reach the Euro 2024 final last summer, making six tournament appearances.

The Liverpool-linked star, who was subject of multiple offers from Newcastle United ahead of this season, has started all 23 of his appearances for Crystal Palace this term. He has netted two goals and laid out an assist for his club so far.

Pundit suggests Chelsea star Cole Palmer has been better than 32-year-old Liverpool forward

Speaking recently on Sky Sports, Arsenal legend Paul Merson asserted that Chelsea star Cole Palmer has outshone Liverpool ace Mohamed Salah this season. He opined (h/t Rousing The Kop):

"I still [think] Palmer [has been better than Salah this season]. I think he's made a massive, massive difference for Chelsea, I think he's made them a much better team, he's been involved a lot more. Salah's playing in an unbelievable team with unbelievable players. And believe it or not, I think [Palmer's] more consistent than Salah in a game of 90 minutes, I think he's involved more."

Merson, who helped the Gunners win two league titles as a player, said:

"Don't get me wrong, I love Salah, he's different class, one of the best in the world. But sometimes you watch Salah and he'll do something and you'll go 'Really?!' or he'll put one over the bar and you'll go 'Really?!' He cannot touch the ball and score two goals in two minutes but Palmer's carried Chelsea, he's been a catalyst. I don't think Salah's been a catalyst, he's in a very good team."

So far this campaign, Palmer has bagged 13 goals and laid out six assists in 22 appearances across all competitions for the Stamford Bridge outfit.

Salah, on the other hand, has contributed a staggering 21 goals and 17 assists in 27 matches across competitions for Liverpool in the ongoing term.
