Barcelona have reportedly been handed a big blow after the court made a ruling on Dani Olmo's registration. The court's verdict came ahead of the club's deadline of December 31 to register Olmo for the second half of the season.
Barcelona signed Dani Olmo in the summer of 2024 for a reported €60 million from RB Leipzig. Due to their financial constraints, the Catalan side have been facing trouble in Olmo's registration with LaLiga. The Spaniard was reportedly registered for the first half of the season owing to defender Andreas Christensen's long-term injury, as per GOAL.
However, as Christensen is nearing his return, Barcelona have been given a deadline of December 31 to re-register Dani Olmo for the second half of the season. The Catalan giants had appealed to the Commercial Court No. 10 on December 23 to secure a precautionary measure that would allow the club to register Olmo for the latter half of the season.
According to a report by Mundo Deportivo, dated December 27, 2024, the court's verdict did not grant Barcelona the precautionary measure to register Dani Olmo. Judge Ignacio Fernandez de Senespleda gave the verdict, which came after a preliminary hearing on December 23, that allowed LaLiga and Barca to present their arguments.
The verdict comes as a major blow for Barca as Dani Olmo is considered one of their most important players. The Spaniard has contributed six goals and one assist in 15 appearances across competitions. Olmo is best valued for his versatility as a forward and has fit well into the Blaugrana field alongside the likes of Pedri, Marc Casado, and Gavi.
How can Barcelona register Dani Olmo ahead of their December 31 deadline?
According to the aforementioned report by Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are set to file another lawsuit against LaLiga in a lower court. The club will appeal to obtain the precautionary measure that will enable Dani Olmo to play in the latter half of the season.
According to the Catalan side, all registration rules applicable in LaLiga are invalid as they are regulated by the Delegate Commission of LaLiga, an authority that they consider incompetent. If the verdict is overturned in favor of Barca, they will be able to register Dani Olmo.
In case the verdict does not go in their favor, Barca are reportedly considering a Plan B by selling some of their VIP box seats at the Spotify Camp Nou. The Catalans' home ground is currently under renovation. The potential sale could reportedly lead to revenue of €120 million.
