Dani Olmo will not be allowed to feature for Spain unless his registration issue with Barcelona is resolved, according to Mundo Deportivo. The 26-year-old moved to Camp Nou this summer from RB Leipzig and has enjoyed a decent season so far.
However, the Catalans only registered the player until December 31, 2024, and are yet to tie him down for the second half of the term. As of now, he can not feature for the club.
The LaLiga giants' poor finances has stopped them from registering the player for the second half of the campaign. Barcelona are reportedly trying to get their finances in order to complete the registration process.
It is now being claimed that Olmo will not be selected in the La Roja squad unless the Catalan side register him for the second half of the season. According to national rules, only players registered with a club can be selected for national duty.
The report could be a huge blow for Spain manager Luis de la Fuente as Olmo remains a key figure for his national team. La Roja are looking ahead to a Nations League quarterfinal against the Netherlands in March and a possible final phase this summer.
The player has subsequently been linked with an exit from Camp Nou in January. However, the report adds that the Spanish giants are poised to operate in LaLiga's 1:1 rule from January 3 onwards after activating economics levers.
Barcelona are reportedly pushing the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) to approach Olmo's situation as a case of force majeure. That could allow the club to register him despite financial difficulties.
However, the scenario remains a complicated affair and much will depend on how the RFEF view LaLiga's stance. The Spanish league were previously of the opinion that the Catalans haven't met the requirements to complete Olmo's registration. But Barcelona remain optimistic that a resolution can be reached on January 3, 2025.
How many goals has Dani Olmo scored for Barcelona this season?
Despite struggling with injuries, Olmo has scored six goals and set up one more from 15 games across competitions for Barcelona this season. The Spaniard has missed eight games for club and country due to muscle injuries since arriving at Camp Nou this summer.
However, when fit, Dani Olmo has been a key figure for Hansi Flick on the pitch. As such, the German manager will also be desperate to have the player available for selection.
