Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has decided against signing a new left-back in January following Marc Cucurella's stellar form, according to TBR Football. The Blues were previously expected to bolster the position at the turn of the year.
However, it now appears that the Spanish full-back has convinced the Italian manager. Cucurella was linked with an exit from Stamford Bridge over the summer, despite winning Euro 2024 with La Roja.
The 26-year-old had a difficult 2023-24 campaign with the London giants. He spent a considerable time on the sidelines due to an ankle injury and registered one goal and two assists from 26 games across competitions.
Chelsea were ready to consider offers for Cucurella this summer as they were unsure of his suitability under Enzo Maresca. The Blues also wanted to offload Ben Chilwell and bring in Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez as the Englishman's replacement.
However, a move never materialized and the London giants were expected to address the position in January. Reece James has operated at left-back at times this season, but the role has largely been carried out by Cucurella.
The Spaniard has been solid at the back, registering 12 appearances, including 10 starts. His efforts have been enough to force Chelsea to change their plans. The player was always keen to continue his stay at Stamford Bridge and is expected to retain his place in the team for now.
How many goals have Chelsea conceded this season?
Chelsea are third in the Premier League with 19 points, nine points behind leaders Liverpool. The Blues have conceded 13 times in the league, the same as reigning champions Manchester City, who are second.
The London giants have let in 20 goals in 18 games across competitions this campaign under Enzo Maresca. The Italian manager, however, could be tempted to sign a new goalkeeper in 2025 amid Robert Sanchez's struggles.
The Spanish custodian has failed to inspire confidence so far, managing just two clean sheets in 11 games in the league. Chelsea roped in Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal this summer, but the Dane has operated exclusively in Cup games and Europe this season.
The Blues also signed Mike Penders from Genk this summer, but the Belgian will only arrive at the club at the end of this season. Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa was linked with the London giants this summer. However, those rumors have dried up of late.
