Thomas Tuchel has reportedly agreed to become England's new manager and will be Gareth Southgate's permanent successor. A deal with the English FA has been concluded, and he's expected to be unveiled this week.
The Times reports that Tuchel will take over the Three Lions and become their first-ever German coach. He's been out of management since last season when he left Bayern Munich.
England prioritized replacing Southgate, who left after Euro 2024, with a 'world-class tactician'. Tuchel has a winning resume, having guided Chelsea to the UEFA Champions League in 2021 and Bayern to the Bundesliga title in 2023.
Thomas Tuchel will become the third foreign manager for the Three Lions after Swede Sven Goran-Eriksson and Italian Fabio Capello. He has a good reputation in English football from his reign at Stamford Bridge, where he has overseen 63 wins in 100 games.
The former PSG manager also knows several members of the Three Lions squad well, including Harry Kane. He coached the England captain at the Allianz Arena, and the nation's all-time top scorer spoke glowingly of his former boss:
"Until it's announced obviously I can't really comment, but we have to wait and see. Obviously, I know Thomas well from last year. Fantastic coach, fantastic person, so I am sure the guys at the FA will contact me, when they know more about it."
Lee Carsley was temporarily put in charge of England after Southgate departed in the summer. He's set to return to the nation's U21 managerial job and hand over the senior role to Tuchel.
England's appointment of Thomas Tuchel means Manchester United and AC Milan miss out
According to the source above, Thomas Tuchel's availability had alerted several clubs that were perhaps looking to make managerial changes. Manchester United held talks with the German in the summer when doubts grew over Erik ten Hag's future at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils stuck with Ten Hag and handed the Dutchman a new one-year contract extension. However, after seven games, the club's worst start to a Premier League season reignited talk of Tuchel being in the frame to replace him.
14th-placed United is set to continue with Ten Hag after the club's co-owners, INEOS, met last week. The managerial situation was discussed, and the Dutch coach returned to Carrington for training today (October 15) to prepare his side for Brentford on Saturday (October 19).
AC Milan was also touted with interest in Tuchel amid a topsy-turvy start to the season under Paulo Fonseca. The Portuguese tactician has come under pressure with his side sitting sixth in the Serie A table.
