David de Gea is reportedly open to joining Serie A side Genoa as he awaits his first club post-Manchester United. The Spanish goalkeeper has been a free agent since July 2023, when he left Old Trafford.

Italian journalist Gianluca di Marzio reports that Genoa has made a proposal to De Gea, and he's considering joining la Superba. He wants to continue playing at the highest level in European football.

David de Gea, 33, was regarded as one of Europe's best shot-stoppers during his 12-year stay at Manchester United. He kept 190 clean sheets in 545 games across competitions.

However, Erik ten Hag opted to let Ten Hag's contract expire last summer, and Andre Onana came in as his replacement. The veteran Spaniard has struggled to find a new club but has been training ahead of a potential move.

Genoa need to replace Josep Martinez after the Spanish goalkeeper joined Inter Milan. De Gea could come in as his replacement, bringing a wealth of experience to the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

De Gea teased fans about his future with a recent post on his X (formerly Twitter) account. The former Manchester United number one uploaded an hourglass emoticon with fans concluding that he'd found a new club.

De Gea's Manchester United departure left a sour taste in the mouth as he didn't get to say goodbye to fans. The Red Devils presented their iconic former goalkeeper with a new contract with reduced wages. He put pen to paper on that deal, but the club made a U-turn and opted not to extend his stay at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag's own future was uncertain during last season amid a poor showing in the Premier League. The Dutch coach oversaw an eighth-placed finish in the first campaign without De Gea as number one.

De Gea felt disrespected by how Ten Hag and former sporting director John Murtough handled his exit. The second source above claims that he was open to returning to United if Ten Hag was relieved of his duties.

INEOS conducted an end-of-season review, and an FA Cup triumph, including a 2-1 win against Manchester City, persuaded them to continue with the Dutchman. Ten Hag signed a new one-year extension to his current contract and will remain in charge until 2026. The club's new co-owners, INEOS, have begun rebuilding his squad for the upcoming season.
