France captain Kylian Mbappe will not feature in his country's second Euro 2024 group game against Netherlands after picking up a facial injury. The Real Madrid forward suffered a broken nose after a collision in his side's opener against Austria on Monday (June 17).
With Les Bleus failing to win the European Championship since 2000, Mbappe was expected to play a starring role for his country. The Real Madrid man has yet to find the net in the competition, having also played in Euro 2020 three years ago.
Kylian Mbappe came close to breaking his jinx in the tournament against Austria after being played through by Adrien Rabiot but the 25-year-old fluffed his lines. The Frenchman would not finish the game, eventually leaving with an injury in the second half.
Mbappe collided with RC Lens defender Kevin Danso, hitting his face into the shoulder of the Austrian defender. The forward was left with a bloodied face afterwards and was taken off. He was confirmed to have suffered a broken nose in the hospital.
Canal Plus have now confirmed that the France captain will not feature in his side's second game against Netherlands on Friday (June 21) due to his injury. He is expected to return to action in the final group game against Poland and will have a mask fitted for him to play with.
Mbappe played a key role for his country as they defeated Austria 1-0, forcing an own goal from Maximilian Wober, who headed his cross into his own goal. Les Bleus will look to extend their winning start to the tournament when they face Netherlands, who defeated Poland in their own opener.
