Lionel Messi's Inter Miami will face competition from Paraguayan club Olimpia for the services of Ivan Leguizamon, according to Inter Miami news. The MLS side are looking to revamp their attack following the departure of Leo Campana, who joined the New England Revolution.
The Herons won the Supporters' Shield this season but faltered in their pursuit of the MLS Cup. Lionel Messi was outstanding for the club, registering 23 goals and 13 assists from 25 goals across competitions.
The Argentinean arrived at the Chase Stadium in the summer of 2023 and has lit up the MLS. The 37-year-old won the Leagues Cup last season and picked up the 46th trophy of his career this year.
The Florida-based club have strengthened their squad over the off-season. They have already roped in Fafa Picault, Bailey Sparks, and Michael Appiah.
New manager Javier Mascherano has found his next target in Leguizamon. The 22-year-old has registered six goals and three assists from 45 games across competitions this season for San Lorenzo. Leguizamon's contract with the Argentinean club runs until 2026. Mascherano believes the player could be a fine backup for Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.
However, Inter Miami are not the only club interested in the Paraguay international. It now appears that he could also have the option to return to his country to join Olimpia.
When does Lionel Messi's contract with Inter Miami expire?
Lionel Messi has entered the final year of his contract with Inter Miami this month. The Argentinean arrived at the Chase Stadium as a free agent following the expiry of his contract with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).
Messi rose through the ranks at Barcelona and became the club's greatest-ever player. However, he was forced to leave Camp Nou in 2021 after the Catalans failed to renew his deal.
He joined PSG as a free agent that summer and spent two seasons at the Parc des Princes. While the player has been indispensable for Inter Miami, his future remains up in the air.
Recent reports have suggested that the club remain confident of keeping the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner at the Chase Stadium beyond his current deal. The Herons' co-owner Jorge Mas has previously expressed a desire to extend Messi's stay. The Florida-based club are preparing to build on their impressive recent rise and the Argentinean remains a key part of their future plans.
