Daily Mail's Simon Jones has claimed that Anthony Gordon was close to joining Liverpool before Newcastle pulled out of the negotiations. Newcastle struggled with the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) and had to find a solution before June 30.
They decided to buy Joe Gomez for £45 million from the Anfield club with Gordon moving the other way for £75 million. A medical was scheduled as well in Leipzig. However, the Magpies solved the situation by selling Yakuba Minteh to Brighton & Hove Albion and through other deals.
The Toons pulled out of the deal as a result and Liverpool suffered a blow having chased Gordon for a while.
Anthony Gordon, 23, joined Newcastle in January 2023 and has since been a key player for Eddie Howe's team. He has so far scored 13 goals and provided 11 assists in 64 appearances for the Tynesiders.
The former Everton star was also a part of the England squad that finished as runner-up at Euro 2024. He played only a minute during the competition, in the Three Lions' final group game against Slovenia.
Liverpool have identified transfer target after failed Anthony Gordon deal
Liverpool boast players like Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo, among others, who can play on the left wing. However, Diaz was linked with a move to Barcelona and the Merseysiders looked to reinforce the position.
Gordon was their first choice and a deal didn't come to fruition. The Merseysiders have turned their attention to Juventus' Federico Chiesa, as reported by CaughtOffside.
Chiesa, 26, is currently in the final year of his Juventus contract and the Old Lady are reportedly looking to sell the player. He could be available for as little as £21 million.
Chiesa can play on both wings and has shown his quality for Juve and Fiorentina, as well as for Italy's national team. Apart from the Reds, other Premier League clubs like Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal have also been linked with Chiesa.
