Liverpool have reportedly offered captain Virgil van Dijk to Atletico Madrid for a potential summer transfer. The Dutch centre-back's contract at Anfield expires next summer.

Van Dijk has been a key player and a leader for the Reds ever since his arrival from Southampton in January 2018 for a reported fee of £75 million. He has made 270 appearances for the club and also contributed 23 goals and 12 assists. He's helped them win almost every trophy available.

The 33-year-old's contract, though, is set to expire next summer and there have been no reports of an extension yet. If he isn't offered a new contract, he will could leave Liverpool for free next summer and even speak to foreign clubs in January 2025.

As per reports (via Football365), the Reds hierarchy have offered Van Dijk to Atletico Madrid this summer. With Jurgen Klopp's departure, the club are set to enter a new era and they would like to start with new faces as well.

However, the Spanish side are reportedly not keen on taking the offer. This is because they are looking at players with a lower profile and wages to manage their finances. As per Capology, Van Dijk earns £220,000 per week, not including bonuses.

Virgil van Dijk on his future at Liverpool after the Netherlands' EURO 2024 exit

Van Dijk led the Netherlands to the EURO 2024 semi-final, where they were knocked out by England on July 10. The Dutch performed decently at the tournament and also opened the scoring in the semi-final through Xavi Simons in the seventh minute.

However, Harry Kane (16' p) and Ollie Watkins (90') sealed a 2-1 win for England. After the game, Oranje captain Virgil van Dijk was asked about his future with the national team and Liverpool. He answered (via Football365):

“I haven’t the slightest idea right now. I will think carefully this summer about what I want at club level and as an international player.
"Then we’ll go for it again, but first recover from this. After a season like this, where all kinds of things have happened, it gets emotional at the end because you know it’s over.”

Van Dijk is still considered one of the best centre-backs in the world. He also helped Liverpool win the Carabao Cup last season, scoring in extra time in their 1-0 win over Chelsea in the final.
