Liverpool deal for England star Anthony Gordon collapses, Reds unwilling to include 21-year-old defender: Reports

Liverpool were reportedly close to signing England star Anthony Gordon this week but a move from Newcastle United fell through. Jarrel Quansah was set to be included in a deal for the former Everton attacker, who is currently with the Three Lions at Euro 2024.

The Daily Mail reports that Newcastle were prepared to sell Gordon to the Merseysiders as they try to comply with financial rules. The 23-year-old winger is on Arne Slot's radar after an impressive 2023-24 season at St James' Park.

Liverpool felt the deal wasn't right for them, as the Magpies wanted rising star Quansah to head in the opposite direction. They view the exciting center-back as a future England international.

Gordon was excellent last season, posting 12 goals and 11 assists in 48 games across competitions. He joined the Tyneside giants from Everton in January 2023 for £40 million plus £5 million in add-ons, and he has two years left on his contract.

Liverpool may have completed a deal for Gordon if the package had been different. Negotiations between the two Premier League heavyweights could pick back up over the weekend.

Quansah isn't at Euro 2024 with England but made Gareth Southgate's provisional 33-man squad. He enjoyed a breakout season at Anfield, appearing 33 times across competitions and helping the Reds keep nine clean sheets. Given his growing into a regular starter, it's understandable why Slot wasn't willing to part with the Warrington-born center-back.

Anthony Gordon appeared to offer Liverpool a come-and-get-me plea while away with England

Anthony Gordon put the cats among the pigeons ahead of Euro 2024 when he claimed Anfield had the best support aside from St James' Park. The young Englishman previously played for arch-rivals Everton, so it was a controversial statement:

"Yeah, other than St James', it's Anfield by far. I think because I'm from the city... I grew up watching. I just think before the game when they (the fans) are singing You'll Never Walk Alone... it's top, it's top level."

Gordon started his youth career with Liverpool's academy before heading to Everton in 2012. He rose through the youth ranks at Goodison Park before reaching senior level in January 2020.

The former Preston North End loanee made 78 appearances for the Toffees, with seven goals and eight assists. He's shown vast progression at Newcastle and could make a debatable move to Anfield this summer.

Gordon's comments came while preparing for Euro 2024 with England. He's made just a one-minute cameo appearance, but many are pining for him to start against Slovakia tomorrow (June 30).
