Liverpool are reportedly gearing up to make a move for Bordeaux teenager Mathys Angely during this summer transfer window. Get French Football News claim that the 17-year-old would be available for free following the Ligue 1 club filed for bankruptcy.
A painful capitulation last season saw Liverpool drop out of the Premier League title race in the dying stages. They are now expected to make determined efforts in the transfer market this summer to come out in better shape when the 2024-25 campaign kicks off.
The Reds have been linked with multiple players over the last couple of weeks. Mathys Angely's has been among the most mentioned. The talented defender has been on the Merseysiders' radar for some time now and it looks like they'll be making a move for him this time.
According to Get French Football News on X, the player could arrive at Anfield as a free agent after his club became bankrupt. Bordeaux announced their decision to file for bankruptcy following a collapse in takeover talks with Fens Sporting Group (FSG) - the same firm that owns Liverpool. They'll now let go of their professional status which they've held on to since 1937.
"It's a difficult decision that anticipates an inevitable consequence of the restructuring process underway," a part of Bordeaux's statement read.
Courtesy of this development, the Merseysiders could get a chance to sign Mathys Angely on a free transfer this summer. The centre-back impressed with the French outfit, making 20 appearances across all fronts, and recording two goals to his name. He is definitely one to keep an eye on.
What's next for Liverpool?
Following the conclusion of the European Championship and the Copa America a few weeks ago, Liverpool will now speed up their preparation for the upcoming campaign. They will hope to get the Arne Slot era off to a solid start.
The Reds will kick off their preseason outing with a clash with La Liga side Real Betis at the Acrisure Stadium on Friday, July 26. That will be followed by a highly anticipated face-off with Arsenal next week on July 31.
Slot's men will then take on Manchester United and Sevilla respectively to conclude their preseason campaign. They will then gear up for their Premier League opener versus Ipswich Town at Portman Road on August 17.
