Liverpool forward turns down new contract offer

Liverpool attacker Luis Diaz has reportedly turned down the Reds' approach for a new contract. As claimed by Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo via The Mirror, the Colombia international has rebuffed the Merseyside giants' contract offer amid interest from Barcelona.

Diaz's current deal at Anfield expires in the summer of 2027 which means he will enter the final two years of his contract next season. Liverpool are quite naturally looking to avoid the situation by handing him a new and improved deal.

However, the versatile attacked is understood to be not happy with the terms offered by the Merseyside club. On top of that, interest from Barcelona is reportedly another reason why he is not willing to commit to his future at Anfield.

Diaz has been an important player for Liverpool since his reported £37.5 million switch from FC Porto in January 2022. The fleet-footed attacker has so far made 124 appearances for the club scoring 36 times and providing 16 assists.

The 27-year-old is having the best season of his career this time out under Arne Slot. The Dutchman has used him across the front three this season and he has contributed with 12 goals and three assists in 26 games.

Barcelona, on the other hand, are hardly in a position to make a move for Luis Diaz. They find themselves in a complete mess due to their financial situation and cannot register Dani Olmo despite signing him in a reported £51 million last summer.

Chelsea icon makes a big claim regarding Mohamed Salah's situation at Liverpool

Former Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has claimed that it would be in Liverpool's best interests to part ways with Mohamed Salah this summer. The Egyptian superstar's future has been up in the air in recent months as his current deal expires this summer.

Salah has been arguably the best player in Europe this season with 21 goals and 17 assists in 28 games across competitions. The 32-year-old has spoken publicly a number of times that he wants to stay at Anfield beyond this season.

Hasselbaink has hailed Salah for his mental strength to keep performing at the highest level despite the contract saga dragging on. However, he insisted that Liverpool must be wary of Salah's age and should not hand him a very long-term deal. The Dutchman told BetMGM:

"There are not a lot of players like Salah who will be playing as well as he is in the last year of their contract. He can obviously put all of the distractions to the side and perform like he has been – I think it really shows how mentally strong he is. If I'm the manager of Liverpool, I obviously want to keep all three of Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold."

He added:

"If I'm the owner and with a business hat on, I would let Salah go because of his age. You would have to pay him mega money and I just don't think you can give a player of his age a three-year contract. Business-wise, it's not sustainable and the best business for Liverpool is to see him go."

Salah has shown no signs of slowing down despite the fact that he turns 33 in June. He is arguably in the best form of his career and his fitness level also remains top-notch.
