According to a report by Fichajes.net (via Caught Offside), Liverpool are planning a possible swoop for FC Porto striker Samuel Omorodion. The 20-year-old is viewed as a possible replacement for Darwin Nunez.
Nunez joined the Merseyside club from Benfica in the summer of 2022. The Reds shelled out a reported £85 million for his services after his impressive breakthrough 2021-22 campaign at Benfica. The Uruguayan recorded 34 goals and four assists in 41 games that season.
However, since moving to England, Nunez has failed to live up to the hype. In 104 games for Liverpool spreading across three seasons, he has managed 34 goals and 18 assists. The 25-year-old has also failed to impress new manager Arne Slot, contributing just one goal and one assist in eight appearances across competitions this term.
As per the aforementioned report, the Merseyside club is now considering roping in another striker, with Porto’s Omorodion being on their radar. The Spanish youngster joined the Portuguese giants in the summer from Atletico Madrid. He was strongly linked with a move to fellow Premier League club Chelsea in the summer, but the deal failed to materialize.
Omorodion has enjoyed a good start to life in Portugal. The 20-year-old striker has bagged seven goals in seven games for Porto, including a brace in the UEFA Europa League against Manchester United. His form has attracted the interest of the Reds as well as Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).
If Nunez continues to be unproductive upfront, Liverpool may be forced to go for a new striker and Omorodion looks like an ideal replacement. The Spain U-21 international is still young and has the potential to develop into a prolific forward for the Merseyside club.
Why did Liverpool target Samuel Omorodion’s move to Chelsea fail?
Samuel Omorodion was heavily linked to Chelsea in the summer. The Blues had reportedly agreed to a £34.5 million deal with Atletico Madrid for the striker and a medical was being planned. Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano also confirmed the reports on his social media platforms.
However, the transfer collapsed and the player eventually signed for Porto. According to The Athletic, the transfer failed to materialize due to a major contract issue.
Nevertheless, with Liverpool now considering signing the 20-year-old, a move to the Premier League could be a possibility in the future.
