Liverpool are reportedly keen on selling versatile defender Joe Gomez this summer. As reported by Sky Sports via Tribal Football, the Reds are open to letting the England international depart as they look to raise funds.
As per the report, Liverpool believe they have enough options in the positions Gomez can play. The Merseyside giants reportedly had a £45 million bid accepted by Newcastle United for Anthony Gordon which would have seen Gomez moving to St. James' Park.
Joe Gomez is currently the longest-serving player in the Liverpool senior setup, having joined the club back in 2015 from Charlton Athletic. Back then, he was just 18 and the Reds were managed by Brendan Rodgers.
Over the years, Gomez has been a solid squad player for the 19-time English champions having featured 224 times for the club across competitions. Injuries have been quite cruel to the defender, who has helped Liverpool win a Premier League title and a Champions League, among other honors.
Jurgen Klopp managed to get the most out of Gomez's versatility and adaptability over the years. While the Englishman is predominantly a centre-back, he has also played as a full-back on either flank and even as a No. 6.
Liverpool have Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Jarell Quansah, and Sepp van den Berg among the options at the heart of the defense. They are also well-covered in full-back positions, meaning Gomez could be sold for the right price.
At 27 years of age, it also makes sense for the England international to seek a new adventure and look for regular first-team football. As per reports, the defender has no shortage of suitors.
Liverpool youngster hails Arne Slot's style of football
Highly-rated Liverpool midfielder Tyler Morton has heaped praise on Arne Slot for his style of play. The Dutchman, who was appointed Jurgen Klopp's successor in the summer, has made a positive impact at Anfield.
The Reds have performed admirably in pre-season, winning against Real Betis and Arsenal. Tyler Morton, who returned from a brilliant loan spell from Hull City, has played his part in both friendlies and looked impressive.
While discussing Arne Slot's style of football, the young English midfielder said (via One Football):
“It was brilliant to watch, I think the team did very well. The style the gaffer is implementing is working and I think it worked today. You can see it’s starting to click already and that’s a big compliment to the management team. I think the players out there today were brilliant, a lot of standout players. I think it’s going to improve quickly and I think it was a very good step in a good direction."
“He loves Total Football. He’s come in and it’s a style a lot of players love. If you don’t love the style he plays, you shouldn’t be a footballer really! It’s Total Football and it’s every midfielder’s dream. You could see it today in the triangles that were played; he’s big on triangles and they were [working] today. I thought it was brilliant, I thought we dominated and against a very good Arsenal side it was a great display,” the 21-year-old added.
Morton will be keen to make the most of his chances in pre-season and make a case for himself ahead of the upcoming season.
